There is nothing better than curling up with a good book. But there’s no denying that reading a book that scares you so much, you can’t read on, but then you have to know what happens is even better. Here are some must read horror books that will have you hiding them in the freezer.
The Terrifying Tales by Edgar Allan Poe
The father of the mystery genre, Poe is a master of the truly terrifying, and this collection of short stories is filled with more terror than a modern day horror movie marathon. His ability to latch onto fears that live at the edge of the subconscious mind and twist them as he rights is a marvel that cannot be oversold.
The Monk by M.G. Lewis
A classic gothic tale from 1796, there is a lot in The Monk to attract even the most avid horror readers. It’s the story of Ambrosio, the monk, who is led into a life of depravity by a woman called Matilda. Matilda has smuggled herself into the monastery disguised as a man. Ambrosio ends up selling his soul to the devil to avoid being tortured by the Spanish Inquisition. However, in the end, the devil throws him over the edge of a cliff onto a pile of rocks, killing Ambrosio. Filled with violence, sex and supernatural goings on, it’s no surprise that is was so popular when it was first published.
