A cross between a detective novel and a psychological thriller, Bitter Fruits Tells the tale of Detective Inspector Erica Martin's first case in the university city of Durham, an investigation into the death of Emily Brabents, a first-year student, who is found dead in the river. Throughout her investigations, DI Martin dives into a close-knit college community that’s full of secrets, obsessions, jealousy, and a vicious online trolling culture. She also finds, rather unexpectedly, a confession by the student president, but should that confession be believed? And what of Daniel Shepherd? A Name that keeps popping up again and again throughout the investigation? What was his involvement?

Britter Fruits, simply put, is nothing short of a page turner, not to mention a deep dive into the effects of a closely knit community. At times procedural, at times eerie and atmospheric, it marks an impressive first effort by Clark-Platts, who already has two other books to her name. But don’t take out word for it, Author Paul Pilkington was quick to chime in with a review of his own, and we couldn’t agree with him more. Pilkington called Bitter Fruits “A thought-provoking, atmospheric and emotional page turning thriller – brimming with mystery and suspense. I absolutely loved this novel,” he added, “and devoured it from cover to cover.”
