The Trouble With The Bourne Endings

As fans eagerly await any news whatsoever concerning the sixth installment in the Bourne franchise, which was announced in 2019, we thought we’d take a look at two tricky endings to two of the Bourne films.

The Bourne Identity. In the case of The Bourne Identity, the trouble came in the form of the script for the final 30 minutes of the films. Reportedly, Universal Studios was unhappy with the third act, and insisted on bringing in a new writer who drew upon Ludlow’s book for the script. Unfortunately, the resulting script clashed with director Doug Liman and star Matt Damon’s vision for the film and its tone. Liman claimed the studio wanted another action scene for the film’s end, resulting in the final 30 minutes being reshot in a mere 10 days, in two different countries no less. The tension grew between Liman and Universal, and unsurprisingly, he was replaced as director for subsequent films.

The Bourne Supremacy. The trouble with The Bourne Supremacy’s script also came in the form of the ending. After a bitter departure, DougLiman was replaced as director by Paul Greengrass, who along with Matt Damn had come up with a new ending to The Bourne Supremacy. They were allowed to film it, this despite its $200,000 price tag, and the fact that Damon had to leave the set of Ocean’s Twelve to do it. All with only two weeks to go before the movie’s release!
